System Integrity in Pool Waterproofing Starts with the Details

Waterproofing in swimming pools requires a comprehensive system approach due to continuous water pressure, chemical exposure, the finishing system, and the numerous penetration and junction details involved. Mansur Bayrak, General Manager of Bayrak Yalıtım, and Salih Reis Bayrak, Board Member and Foreign Trade & E-Commerce Manager, emphasize that alongside selecting the right waterproofing system, application details, substrate conditions, and post-application inspections are decisive factors in ensuring long-term performance.
Highlighting Bayrak Yalıtım’s more than 35 years of industry experience, Mansur Bayrak states that the company positions itself not merely as an applicator, but as a solution partner providing project design and technical consultancy services. He emphasizes the importance of selecting the appropriate product type according to the project requirements, construction details, and budget, adding that the company aims to deliver long-term value through proper system selection, detail-oriented application, and a commitment to sustainable performance.
Commenting on the project planning process, Salih Reis Bayrak explains that system selection is based on a combined assessment of the type of structure, ground conditions, intended use, climatic data, long-term performance expectations, maintenance costs, and budget. Rather than offering a standard solution for every project, Bayrak notes that they develop systems tailored to the specific requirements of each project. Their systematic project management approach covers site surveys and risk analysis, preparation of technical specifications, detailed design, material optimization, application planning, quality control, and final handover following water testing.
Mansur Bayrak states that, in swimming pool applications, they prefer flexible systems capable of withstanding continuous water pressure and chemical exposure. For applications beneath ceramic finishes, they use EVAC-based textile membranes together with dedicated sealing tapes and corner solutions. For over-tile applications and renovation projects, the system is selected according to project-specific conditions and the state of the existing substrate. Bayrak points out that penetration details, lighting fixtures, and skimmer areas are critical to maintaining waterproofing continuity, while water-retention testing after application is used to verify system integrity and workmanship quality.
In pool renovation projects, Mansur Bayrak notes that the condition of the existing substrate plays an important role in system selection. Where conditions allow, systems that can be applied without completely removing the existing ceramic tiles or finishes may be preferred. This approach offers significant advantages by reducing demolition and construction waste, limiting additional construction work, and lowering both labour requirements and application time. Bayrak stresses that minimizing downtime is particularly important for hotels, spas, and commercial swimming pools. He adds that the appropriate system should be determined only after assessing substrate integrity, moisture conditions, adhesion requirements, and critical detailing points.
In areas subject to high moisture loads, such as indoor swimming pools, spas, and hammams, Salih Reis Bayrak emphasizes that vapour control is just as critical as waterproofing. He explains that an inadequate vapour barrier may allow water vapour to penetrate structural elements over time and reach the reinforcement within reinforced concrete, increasing the risk of corrosion. Bayrak notes that the low vapour permeability of Revestech membranes contributes to protecting the structure against these effects, underlining that vapour control is an often unseen but critical component of system design in high-humidity environments.
At Bayrak Yalıtım, pool waterproofing is approached not as a single product or application stage, but as an integrated system comprising complementary materials, solutions, and construction details. Mansur Bayrak and Salih Reis Bayrak emphasize that proper system selection, accurate assessment of substrate conditions, uninterrupted treatment of critical details, and post-application inspections form the foundation of long-lasting, safe, and sustainable waterproofing performance.
