“Serapool’s Custom-Sızed Porcelaın Tıles Create A Sımpler, More Ordered And Cohesıve Surface Appearance On Pool Floors”

In pool design, aesthetic expectations are increasingly being considered alongside technical performance, user comfort and architectural integrity. Particularly in renovation projects, preserving the character of an existing structure while meeting contemporary design expectations and long-term usage requirements makes the right choice of materials more important than ever. The Alarko Dört Mevsim Evleri pool renovation project stands out as a noteworthy example of this approach. Interior Architect Billur Saruhan Karakaya, who was involved in the design and material selection processes of the project, evaluated the renovation process, the contribution of Serapool Porcelain products to the project and the design advantages offered by large-format porcelain tiles.

As a member of the Ankablue team working on pool projects, Karakaya stated that aesthetic considerations, technical requirements and user comfort were evaluated together throughout the project. She explained that they approached the pool not merely as a functional space, but as an important design element that complements the architectural character of its surrounding living environment. She noted that the existing pool had developed a need for renovation over time due to waterproofing issues, surface deterioration and hygiene-related problems, adding that their primary goal was to preserve the existing architectural character while creating a more modern, simple, safe and durable space.

Karakaya stated that, in addition to aesthetic criteria, they prioritized durability, functionality and safe use when selecting materials. Accordingly, they chose Serapool Porcelain products for the project. She explained that Serapool’s wide range of sizes, colors and surface options, together with its complementary solutions, enabled them to approach the pool as a cohesive architectural whole using a consistent design language.

The pool walls were finished with Natural Series Antique Grey 16.5×66 cm, while the same series in 33×66 cm was used on the pool floor. Karakaya noted that the 16.5×66 cm format follows the pool’s curved and circular geometry, supporting visual continuity throughout the space. She added that 5×5 cm Antique Grey porcelain mosaics were used in more delicate areas to maintain continuity of the form, while the Flex grates used in the overflow channel adapted to the circular geometry and contributed to a cleaner, more integrated overflow line. In the terrace area, Natural Series Mocha 33×66 cm porcelain tiles created a controlled contrast with the Antique Grey tones, establishing visual continuity between the pool and terrace.

Highlighting the advantages of large-format porcelain tiles in pool design, Karakaya stated that using fewer grout joints creates a simpler, more orderly and cohesive surface appearance. She explained that the 33×66 cm custom-sized porcelain tiles used in the project reduced visual density, particularly across the large pool floor, and contributed to a more contemporary overall appearance.

She also noted that fewer grout joints offer advantages in terms of maintenance. According to Karakaya, reducing the number of joints helps minimize areas where dirt and limescale can accumulate, making cleaning and maintenance processes easier to manage.

A More Natural Surface Perception with 9 Face

Karakaya stated that Serapool’s 9 Face surface technology contributes to a more natural and dynamic appearance across large surfaces. She explained that the different surface variations reduce visual repetition while maintaining the same color and textural character. The interaction between water, light and the porcelain surface also creates subtle variations in tone and texture, giving the pool a more distinctive character.

Interior Architect Billur Saruhan Karakaya emphasized that aesthetic considerations and technical performance cannot be viewed separately in successful pool design. She concluded that a successful application should not only deliver an appealing appearance on the first day, but should also maintain its quality, durability and user comfort over many years.
