Spa Industry Association continues to grow day by day with more than 72 thousand members. We talked to the SPA Industry Association (SIA), which aims to bring the worldwide community together, and the world spa industry, SIA President Allen Share…
Could you give information about the establishment of the Spa Industry Association? For what purpose was this association established and what kind of activities does it carry out?
A-The SIA was started in 1989 as the Day Spa Association. As the medical spa market grew, the International Medical Spa Association was added as a sister organizition. During the last 5 years as the market has come together, we merged both associations into the present day Spa Industry Association. Our mission is to “connect the community” across the globe. We are a source for all resources for our members (who do you know, where do we find, what do we do when)
How do you evaluate the worldwide development of the Spa Industry? What are the problems faced by the industry in your country and around the world?
The spa industry continues to grow. The World has ups and downs and so does spa, but we seem to recover süper quick. Right now the spa channel is rebuilding as the World economy comes back on track. Some of the bigger changes would be touchless or low-touch services. The biggest issue we have right now is finding good staff. AS we come back from the pandemic, many industry people have moved on to other jobs and are not coming back to the spa business. This hurts revenue, the ability to be open more hours and will hobble growth
SPA has a holistic approach to human health. In this sense, what is expected from spa treatments, what are the things that should be expected?
Again, the new environment is about low-touch. In the US market we’re seeing services like flotation, sauna, salt therapy, light therapy, becoming part of a spas offerings. This is not to deny “touch” which is the basis for our industry. A study done recently said people are interested in more touch when vaccinated.
Spa treatments are also a serious binding argument for changing people’s lifestyles and habits. What can be done to better evaluate this situation?
There is pretty clear data that massage (touch) is beneficial to health. In past days, people ran to their doctor when they had a sniffle. Now, going to the spa first is becoming common place. They may try massage, body treatments, acupuncture, chiropractics before they go for alopathic help
What kind of collaborations can be made with Turkish spa industry professionals? Can you tell us about the studies you have planned in this direction?
Our industry has always been good at sharing. When I got in the industry 33 years ago, the mantra was “educate, educate, educate.” I don’t believe anything has changed today. Our association is always about collaboration and we have partners across the globe. Being part of the Turkish Spa industry is good for us both and we are pleased to be asscociated with you
