“Digitalisation Is No Longer a Choice for the Industry — It Is a Reality”

Playing a guiding role across a wide range of areas—from the development of standards and sustainability policies to digital transformation and energy efficiency—EUSA stands out as one of the most influential organisations shaping the future of the European pool and spa industry. Speaking about how the technical and regulatory framework is formed across Europe, the impact of digitalisation on the sector, sustainability-driven approaches and the roadmap towards 2026, EUSA President Pedro Arrebola stated: “Digitalisation is no longer a choice for the industry; it is a reality.”

According to EUSA President Pedro Arrebola, EUSA was established in response to the need for the European pool and spa industry to be represented with a unified voice. He explains that the organisation’s core objective is to engage directly with European public authorities and contribute to the creation of a regulatory framework that is “accurate, balanced and sustainable” for the sector. Emphasising that EUSA has grown significantly stronger and more influential compared to its early years, Arrebola underlines its role as a platform that enhances knowledge sharing and fosters common approaches among European countries.

Conde notes that technical standards in Europe are developed within the legally authorised committees of CEN (the European Committee for Standardization), where EUSA actively participates as a member. He stresses that EUSA’s priority is to ensure that these standards are “rational, practical and genuinely useful for professionals,” supporting the sector’s development rather than hindering it. In areas such as filtration systems, disinfection technologies and equipment selection, the focus remains on establishing a harmonised legal framework across Europe—one that enables the public to use pool and spa facilities safely and with confidence.

Addressing technological transformation, Arrebola is unequivocal in his assessment of digitalisation’s role in the industry. “Digitalisation is no longer a choice for the industry; it is a reality,” he reiterates, pointing to the rapid expansion of automation systems and real-time water quality monitoring. These developments, he explains, make the continuous updating of regulations and standards unavoidable. EUSA therefore supports a dynamic approach to standardisation that reflects the sector’s current technological landscape.

Arrebola also highlights that the effective implementation of standards is directly linked to a well-trained and qualified workforce. He describes EUSA as “a platform that enables knowledge exchange among sector stakeholders across Europe and coordinates joint positions and actions,” while emphasising the crucial role played by national associations. For this reason, he strongly encourages companies operating in the sector to actively participate in their respective national trade associations.

Sustainability remains a central pillar of EUSA’s agenda. Arrebola’s message is clear: energy efficiency, water conservation and the reduction of carbon footprints are no longer optional, but essential. He explains that EUSA facilitates the sharing of information and best practices in these areas, adding that “having swimming pools with high efficiency levels and effective use of energy and water resources has become a fundamental requirement.”

Finally, Arrebola points to the importance of the EUSA Awards in promoting excellence within the industry. By recognising outstanding pool and spa projects, the awards serve as a strong reference point for both professionals and end users. Their primary aim, he says, is to encourage the development of “high-quality, exemplary facilities” across Europe. While resource efficiency and sustainability dominated the agenda in 2025, Arrebola concludes that from 2026 onwards, greater emphasis will also be placed on communicating the sector’s broader value—highlighting not only its economic contribution, but also its positive impact on health, quality of life and social interaction.
