Thanks to Piscina & Wellness Barcelona’s commitment to sustainability, the sector offers solutions that guarantee minimum resource consumption while respecting the environment. |
The pool industry bases its great efforts in R&D on innovation to transform pools into sustainable, efficient, healthy and easy-to-maintain structures.
Sustainability studies constitute one of the agenda items of the world. What would you say if we asked you to evaluate the sustainability efforts in the pool industry? Nearly 300 companies from 26 countries participate in the fair. As Piscina & Wellness, you have a good command of the pool industry. What are the innovative and technological developments on the agenda of the pool industry?
The pool industry bases its great effort in R&D& I on innovating to turn the pool into a sustainable, efficient, healthy and easy-to-maintain structure. Thanks to its commitment to sustainability – which Piscina &Wellness Barcelona shares – today the industry is already in a position to provide solutions that guarantee the minimum consumption of resources while respecting the environment. In this context, I would like to point out that sustainability has several aspects: environmental, but also economic and social. The objective of the sector and the show is to continue focusing on sustainability, taking care of all the details to create ecosystems capable of saving, reusing and recycling resources and that promote health, well-being and social connections between the members of a community.
Currently, high-efficiency heat pumps, robotic pool cleaners, pool covers, aerothermal energy, innovations in filtration with sand or glass, ultraviolet radiation or salt chlorination to reduce the use of chemicals, LED lighting, Intelligent digitalized systems to keep the glass in perfect condition even from a distance are all elements that the industry already provides, without stopping to continue researching to improve existing products or create new solutions.
Newly built swimming pools also have architectural projects designed to take advantage of natural energy, reduce consumption and recycle water for irrigation. The use of reused materials is also a very good option for the construction of new vessels, such as stainless steel or modular panel systems. Everything adds up and drives the development of a new culture of water, an element that must be used increasingly rationally and controlled, and that must be regenerated and reused.
For our part, in this edition we continue with the Towards Zero Impact sustainability initiative, to minimize the environmental impact of the event and become the most sustainable in the sector. The collaboration with the company Masque Initiatives stands out, which will provide the service of filling and emptying the exhibitors pools with vitalized seawater. After the closure of the show, the water will be reused to fill swimming pools in Catalonia. Also thanks to the company Tree Nation we will plant 1,000 trees generating positive environmental and social impacts in 7 world regions.
Could you give a brief evaluation of the swimming pool industry in the world? How do you see the development of the pool industry, especially in developing countries?
The pool sector in the United States is the most important market in the world in terms of private pools and spas built, far ahead of the rest of the international markets, mainly as a result of the geographical extension of the American country. According to the Association of Pool & Spa Professional (APSP), which for more than half a century has grouped and defended the economic and professional interests of pool, spa and hot tub manufacturers, the United States has 5.1 million residential pools and 360,000 commercial swimming pools. (source: ASOFAP)
Brazil is, after the United States and France, the third most important market in the world. Spain, for its part, is the second market in Europe and fourth worldwide.
Germany is the third largest market in Europe after France and Spain. An estimated 9,500 pools are built each year, with high-end pools accounting for around a third of them, according to Businesscoot.
Therefore, the global context tells us that the market has a high growth potential, especially due to the increasing demand for rest and relaxation, and that water areas in this sense are one of the best sources of health, relaxation, well-being, as well as physical, social and sports activities. There is no doubt that the sum of the benefits provided by these opportunities increases the quality of life of the users.
Thanks to the therapeutic function of water, the presence of water facilities affects housing purchasing decisions
The therapeutic function of water also continues to flourish, and this is especially noticeable in new urban constructions, where the presence of aquatic facilities is an attraction and a key added value when deciding to purchase a home. On the other hand, in the hotel sector, spaces dedicated to swimming pools, outdoor spaces, spas and wellness centers are increasingly essential to attract customers. Developing countries with high tourism potential are aware of this and integrate water areas in most of their hotel projec”ts or other types of accommodation designed to accommodate the flow of travelers.
Furthermore, this global trend seems confirmed by the results of the Market Analysis and Insights: Global Swimming Pool Market report, published by Market Growth Report in November 2022, according to which swimming pools are a popular source of recreation for households around the world. . The global swimming pool market is expected to reach $13.81 billion by 2028, up from $775.4 million in 2021, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.8% during the period 2023–2028.
Could you evaluate the Turkish swimming pool industry? What are your suggestions to companies in Turkey?
The swimming pool industry in Turkey has seen notable growth in recent decades, driven largely by the rise of the tourism and hospitality sector in Mediterranean coastal cities. At the same time, the rise of urbanization has generated a growing demand for residential pools in single-family homes, as this leads to a significant increase in property values.
The Turkish Swimming Pool Industry Association, which brings together the main manufacturers and distributors, is doing a very good job to promote and open the European market to companies in the sector. Turkish companies are demonstrating a strong commitment to innovation, aligning themselves with international standards. This approach is driving its growing presence in the European market and marks a trend that is reflected in the attendance at Piscina & Wellness Barcelona of more than 20 companies from Turkey. This confirms the show as a gateway to European markets, and an effective business booster for expanding countries, with an already well-established tourism industry that, at the same time, continues to present high growth potential, such as Turkey.
Finally, is there anything you would like to add?
First of all, I want to express to the Turkish companies that have been attending for several editions and to those that are participating for the first time in Piscina & Wellness Barcelona my gratitude for trusting our event as a key platform to expand their business, find new clients, and learn about the latest innovations in the pool product value chain. We work to always live up to your expectations. And to the professionals who read HAVUZ & SAUNA, I would like to remind you that if you decide to travel to Barcelona from November 27 to 30 to visit us, you will be welcome and we will be happy to assist you.
